The news taht Freedom Elementary Teacher, Neng Yang, is facing charges for molesting a second grade student was disturbing for many parents. Amber Von Flue is a first time mom and is already worried about teaching her son about possible dangers, even though he's onlly two. "I know i need to be on top of it, I just dont have quite the right plan yet," said Von Flue.
Dr. Toni Dupont-Morales, a Victimologist and Professor at Fresno State, worked with child victims in sexual abuse cases for more than a decade. She has tips for parents. "I think you teach your child that an adult can make mistakes, you teach a child to ask questions and to challenge an adult if they dont feel comfortable about something," said Dupont-Morales.
The key is creating an open and comfortable environment for kids to speak up if there is a problem. But there is a wrong way to approach the subject.
"Did somebody touch you, did somebody say sonething to you, did they ask you to touch them. Children shouldn't be asked those questions all of the time," said Dupont-Morales.
"You don't want to scare your children, you want them to feel safe but at the same time somehow we have to instill in them what is ok and whats not ok," said Nancy Garcia, a concerned Grandmother.
The Clovis Unified Teacher appeared in Federal Court Monday, Clobis Police is still investigating the possibility of more victims.
"Hopefully problems like this will not fly under the radar anymore," sand Von Flue.
Yang is facing State and Federal charges. He will be arraigned at the Fresno County Courthouse for the State charges Wednesday and will be back in Federal Court Thursday.
