A local church and valley marine are helping thousands of shoeless Afghan kids.
Flipside Church in Madera Ranchos is collecting flip flops to send overseas.
One of the church members is married to a marine who is currently deployed in Afghanistan.
He came up with this idea after seeing children walk around barefoot everyday in rocky terrain and 100 plus degree heat.
"The kids that are lucky enough to have a pair of shoes, they are broken worn and most times they are too small," said Renee Ginn the marine's wife.
"What gets me is that our men and women over there aren't just doing their military job, they care about the people," said the pastor at Flipside Church, Karl Roth.
Over the course of a month, Flipside Church collected more than 4,000 flip flops.
The huge shipment will be sent out early as Thursday.
