The investigation into the latest officer-involved shooting is under way, after police opened fire on a suspect early Monday morning.
Officers were responding to reports of a man with a gun, threatening members of his own family.
When police arrived, they say the man with the gun would not obey orders to drop the weapon and came at them with his gun, forcing them to open fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.
This shooting happened the same day the City of Fresno released a report by the former police auditor, Eddie Aubrey.
The 74-page report focuses on two key issues: officer-involved shootings and the city's early alert system, which tracks an officer's performance history.
Aubrey audited three officer-involved shooting cases that were closed in 2010. In each of those cases, he found the use of force was justified, but still believes changes are needed.
The judge presiding over the wrongful death trial centered on the Fresno Police Department asked for a clean copy of the report just last week. In that trial, the family of Steven Vargas believes police were not justified when they shot and killed him in October 2009.
Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin is working to reinstate the police auditor’s position in the next city budget.
